Designing around user expectations

Knowing your audience can sometimes restrict what you design.

Where you work can restrict your creativity somewhat. I’ve been reflecting on some design work I’ve been doing at my job, and how it’s tempting to go ‘all out’ and design something ultra modern and interesting. The difficulty in doing this is that in my case, that would be against the expectations of the users I deal with.

An environment in which users are used to dealing with office applications, and utilitarian UI isn’t going to respond well to something completely different, however well designed and modern it may be.

Just a short post to note that just becase you can doesn’t always mean that you should. There’s a Jurassic Park quote in there somewhere.
